Growing up in Germany (in the 1990s) this classic no-bake called “cold dog” (Kalter Hund) was an essential part of every children’s birthday party. Seriously there was literally no birthday party where there wasn’t this no-bake cake to be found on the cake buffet. PS: In case you have no clue what I am talking about here. You might be more familiar wit the term “hedgehog slices”, but even though they might be similar, they are not quite the same to what we know as Germans Hedgehog Slices aka. “cold dog”.
German Hedgehog Slices (aka “cold dog”) vs. common Hedgehog Slices
So, whats the difference between our German Hedgehog Slices and other Hedgehog Slices. Let’s get to the core of things – literally.
Compared to our German Hedgehog Slices (“cold dog” / Kalter Hund) common Hedgehog slices are made with way more ingredients e.g. desiccated coconut, walnuts, sweet condensed milk, crushed biscuits and chocolate.
But our German classic no-bake cake only needs chocolate, sweet butter biscuits (Butterkekse), coconut oil and full cream. Or if you want to upgrade to the adult version, you could also add some espresso and/ or rum – I know this sounds fun, right?! And don’t be deceived by its simplicity – this German Hedgehog Slice is an absolute dreamy dessert for young and old.
How to German Hedgehog Slices: Let’s get no-baking
Ingredients (24 cubes):
- 75 g dark chocolate
- 220 g milk chocolate
- 75 g coconut oil + extra to grease ice cube trays
- 75 ml full cream (optional: + extra to whip)
- 100 g plain sweet biscuits or butterfingers
- XL ice cube tray
- optional: strong espresso or 2 tsp instant espresso / 3 tbsp rum
- optional: berries or fruit as garnish
Instructions:
- Chop chocolate roughly.
- In a medium sized bowl combine coconut oil and chocolate. Melt over a water bath at medium temperature. Stir to combine chocolate and coconut oil.
- Optional: You can add now the espresso or instant espresso or rum to the chocolate mixture.
- Take the melted chocolate of the heat. Then add full cream to the chocolate mixture and stir well. The mixture should thicken when adding the cream.
- Grease the ice cube trays with oil for easier removal of the German Hedgehog slices.
- Layer biscuits and chocolate – starting with a layer of melted chocolate, followed by a biscuit layer. You might have to cut the biscuits to size. Repeat until each ice cube compartment is filled.
- Let cool down in the freezer for at least 35-45 minutes or until set. You can let them set in the fridge as well, but allow more time to cool and set up to 2 hours.
- Remove the little cakes carefully out of the ice cube trays.
- Enjoy.
- Optional: whip the rest of full cream and garnish the little cakes with whipped cream and fresh berries or fruit.
